The Simple Things

The campaign #TheSimpleThings was developed based on interviews with parents of queer children in Georgia. It is based on the real family stories. The conversations revealed a recurring experience: families navigating fear, stigma, social judgement and deeply rooted expectations about sexuality and gender. Parents spoke about the pressure of social norms, fear of how relatives and communities might react, lack of reliable information, and beliefs that being queer was something that could be changed or “cured.” These attitudes can create distance within families and leave queer children facing rejection, isolation and the feeling that they must hide who they are. At the same time, many of the stories showed that attitudes can change: with information, openness and time, acceptance can bring parents and children closer together.

Based on these interviews, we created a media campaign combining animation with documentary elements. The campaign uses direct quotes and real voices of mothers, while parts of the film include actual footage of the women’s hands to preserve their anonymity. The visual concept contrasts the colourful world of a child with the rigid black-and-white world of adults, reflecting how social pressure, fear and repression can shape family relationships — and how they can be replaced by understanding, connection and acceptance.

At the heart of The Simple Things
is a simple message to parents:
learn, listen, stand by your child,
and love your children
just the way they are.

The name Simple Things refers to something that should be natural and unconditional: being loved and accepted by your parents for who you are. Love, care and support may sound like simple things, but for many queer children they cannot always be taken for granted. The campaign reminds us that these simple things can make a profound difference in a child’s life and in the relationship between parents and their children.
